CHAMPIONS OF FREEDOM & FIREARMS SAFETY

Nestled in the scenic rolling hills of Freedom, Indiana, Sycamore Valley Gun Club (SVGC) stands as a proud model of what a dedicated, NRA-affiliated, member-operated club can achieve. Led by their current president, James Shride, and built on a foundation of self-reliance, outdoor sportsmanship, and constitutional liberty, SVGC is far more than just a place to shoot—it is an educational hub, a regional leader in firearms safety, and a vibrant community dedicated to preserving America’s Second Amendment heritage.
Heritage Rooted in Freedom
For decades (Formalized in Bloomington, IN around 1950), SVGC has served as a haven for marksmen and families throughout Owen County and beyond. As a member-managed club, every range upgrade, safety protocol, and event is driven by shooters who care deeply about the sport and their local community. Today based in scenic Freedom, Indiana, our shared traditions are passed down from generation to generation, teaching young and new shooters alike that freedom goes hand in hand with both personal responsibility and accountability.

Community Outreach: Bringing Firearms Education to Bloomington
Education is the bedrock of safe gun ownership. In a proactive effort to demystify shooting sports, SVGC recently returned its outreach into nearby Bloomington, Indiana.
Through public Open Houses and accessible community training sessions, the club opens its facilities to curious beginners, first-time gun owners, and experienced marksmen looking to hone their skills. These events provide a welcoming, zero-judgment atmosphere where attendees learn essential gun safety rules, proper handling mechanics, and the fundamentals of marksmanship from experienced mentors.
Building Qualified Leaders: NRA Instructor Certification
To maintain the highest standards of instruction, SVGC actively invests in its own members through a comprehensive NRA Instructor Certification initiative over the last two years.

By sponsoring and facilitating courses for members to earn their credentials as NRA Certified Pistol and Rifle Instructors, the club ensures that local safety programs are led by highly trained, certified professionals. This “train-the-trainer” model expands the club’s educational capacity, allowing SVGC to offer structured courses ranging from basic handguns to precision rifle marksmanship.

Community is Key
For the past several years their membership is proud to have provided high quality training, modern facilities, and critical resources to organizations such as the Indiana State DeMolay, the Civil Air Patrol, the Owen County 4H program and many others. They appreciate that our sports future always belongs to the next generation, so they embrace the role of teacher and mentor to ensure all who ask are giving the best possible foundations for safety, marksmanship, and shooting sports heritage.
Honoring Fellowship & Patriotism: Celebrating America’s 250th

At SVGC, marksmanship goes hand-in-hand with fellowship. The power of a strong range community was on full display during the club’s recent Members Picnic and Fireworks Spectacular, held in honor of America’s 250th Birthday.
Club families, instructors, and community neighbors gathered on the range grounds for a day of shared meals, recreational target shooting, and celebration. As evening arrived, a massive fireworks display illuminated the Freedom night sky—a fitting tribute to two and a half centuries of American liberty and the tight-knit community that keeps those freedoms alive today.
