High Power State Championships Wrap Up

Sue Mogul, Co V-P High Power

First in the State Championship Series was the New F-Class State Championship Memorial Day Weekend, 26-27 May. The disappointing turnout may have been due to the very iffy weather forecast, but we got to shoot the whole weekend and had a very good time and some good shooting. The new F-Class targets are tough! Congratulations to Match Winner and Indiana State Champion Tom Seber, 755-16 and 1st F/TR Dale Carpenter, 745-11. Dale's 191-5 was submitted for a new National F/TR Record, breaking the old 178-1 record set in March 2007. Congratulations, Dale!

(L to R) are State Champion Lynn Richter, Eric Becker and Brian Decker

Starting the September portion of the State Championship Series were the Across the Course and Leg matches 8-9 September. Despite a pretty iffy forecast we got to shoot BOTH matches! Lynn Richter was Match Winner and 2007 State Champion with 784-19; 2nd Indiana Roger Copsey 782-17, First Service Rifle and Third Indiana Brian Decker 780-25. 2007 State High Master Champion is Logan Montgomery; State Master Service Champion Dave Schnelle, Master Match State Champion Dean Drews, Expert State Champion Eric Becker; High Junior and Peter Faatz Award winner Will Burford, and Second High Junior Ethan Chesser. This is the Second Year for the Peter Faatz Award, in memory of Peter Faatz a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in Atlanta, GA in July of 2006.

Linda Decker did a great job running the "Leg" match! Congratulations go to Match Winner Brian Decker, 488-17, and Silver Medalist Scott Flowers, 485-12. Bronze medal went to Lynn Richter, 483-11. Leg points went to Karl Ohlinger, 480-14, and Robert Winding, 479-19. Good shooting!

Brian Decker won the Moncrief Service Rifle Trophy (R)

Lynn Richter won the 100-Yard Reduced Course State Championship hosted by Hoosier Hills Rifle and Pistol Club 16 September, setting two National Records and tying a third in the process. His 794-36 was submitted for the 100-yard National Match Course (senior) National Record, previously held by…Lynn Richter. Prone Rapid (200-11) and Prone Slow (200-14, tie) were also submitted for records. Congratulations, Lynn!

Also new, this year was the 300-yard Prone match hosted by Ft. Wayne Rifle and Revolver Club. Mark Walters and Lynn Richter were Match Winner and 2nd, both with 595-24. Congratulations and good shooting!

September 29-30 was the ISRPA Long Range State Championship, the last ISRPA State Championship in the 2007 season. First of all, Many Thanks to all our non-firing volunteers who made the whole Championship series successful. Across the course, Dan Ireland gave up shooting to run the match on Saturday; Cheryl Neace and Julie Idlewine did a terrific job on Stats; for the Leg Match on Sunday Mike Idlewine ran pits and Linda Decker did a Great job running the Match.  Kevin McDonald and Mike Idlewine hosted the 100-yard reduced course match at Hoosier Hills, and Mark Walters hosted the new 300-yard State Championship match at Ft. Wayne Rifle and Revolver. Long Range: Mike, Dan, and Sue gave up a weekend and shooting opportunity to run the matches. Without our non-firing volunteers, we could not have a registered match. Huge Thanks to Phil for all your help and running pits! In addition, thanks go to Eric Jones and Earl Singleton for running pits for the Team Match. You make these matches not only possible, but also enjoyable!

We had great weather and really tricky conditions this weekend! Great shooting and congratulations to Hard-holding Match Winner Brian Litz, 841-40! Second Overall and 1st High Master Jeffrey Graham, 831-31; 1st Indiana Kevin McDonald, 829-40; 2nd Indiana Chris “Muffin” Vaughan, 825-26; 3rd Indiana Lynn Richter, 815-27. Welcome to all our new shooters and welcome back all of our F-Class friends! The Palma format on Saturday was well received and we plan to do more such matches in future seasons.

Camp Atterbury faces South, and this late in the season with the sun lower in the sky the light is not always our friend - the targets are darker and it’s really hard to see the shots in the pits and harder to see the conditions on the line. Your fellow shooters are doing their best in the pits. The wind and mirage were very difficult this weekend. A huge thanks to all of you who graciously accepted the conditions and not only shot well, but gave your best pit service too. You exemplify the best of Highpower shooting and sportsmanship. You are the ones for which we give our time and energy and give up our shooting opportunity to hold these matches. For a couple of you, let me suggest that jumping to the immediate, easy conclusion of “poor pit service” does nothing to illuminate real causes of your shooting problems.

To recap the rest of the 2007 ISRPA State Championship Series:  This weekend was also the conclusion of the ISRPA Aggregate Championship—the Aggregate of the Across the Course State Championship, 100 Yard Reduced Course State Championship, and the Long Range State Championship. Congratulations and great shooting to ISRPA Aggregate Champion Lynn Richter, 2823-98. Close on his heels is Roger Copsey, 2806-85. Congratulations & good shooting!
